Our Reading Reward Scheme 2024/25

Why have we introduced this scheme?

Reading at home is one of the most important ways in which you can help your child. Children who read with their families develop these skills much more quickly and develop a love of reading that can last a lifetime. At Plantation we recognise the really important role parents have and want to support this in every way we can, and we hope this scheme will really motivate children to read at home.

How does it work?

The scheme is very simple. All children have to do is read at home and have their Home School Planner signed by an adult. Each day of reading counts as one read. Weekends and school holidays can also be used as reading days. It does not matter how much or how little your child reads in that day, but as long they read something in that day, then their planner can be signed.

For younger children, we ask them to read their school reading book. We recognise the importance of all reading experiences, like bedtime stories, but for the purposes of our scheme we only reward when children read their school reading book. Children are welcome to re-read these books to encourage fluency and to improve confidence when reading aloud. We expect this reading to take place with an adult as the children will still need lots of support.

As the children become more independent in their reading and move off our colour banded books onto our Key Stage Two readers and free readers, we realise that they will read a much more varied range of books and sometimes read on their own. If children are reading on their own, please ask them a few questions about what they have read before you sign the planner to ensure they have carefully read and fully understood the text. However, we would still recommend you regularly listen to your child read aloud to develop fluency, expression and awareness of audience. The whole point of the scheme is to improve reading standards and this will only happen if children are having quality reading sessions.

The class teacher will check the planner to see how many reading days your child has achieved but please make your child’s class teacher aware as soon as your child has reached one of the milestones set out below. To help keep track of the amount of reads, we find it easier to keep a total at the top of each page in the planner. For example, if in the first week your child reads 5 times, then put a 5 at the top of the page. If in the next week your child reads another 5 times, please then put a 10 at the top of the page. This is then keeping a running total and helps us all to keep track of how many reads your child has completed throughout the year.

With the start of each new academic year the scheme will begin again with a new set of rewards.
