Year 6 - Mr McGorian 2023 - 2024

Welcome to Mr McGorian’s Year 6 class page.

This year will be extremely busy and this parent/carer information will provide you with the information you need:

PE:

  • Wednesday - Outdoor PE
  • Friday - Indoor PE

On the days that your child has a PE lesson we ask that they come to school in their PE/Games kit.  They will wear this kit for the whole day instead of their uniform.

Please ensure your child comes to school in the correct PE kit with a plain tracksuit and trainers to wear for the whole day.  Children should not be attending school in replica sports kits, such as football kits.

Homework:

Times Tables - Children have a unique username and password for the TTRockstars website/app. Here, children can play a number of games to help with their multipilcation and division facts.

Spellings - Spellings for Year 6 will follow the Read Write Inc. programme. Children will use their Practice Books in school to complete 5 days of spelling activities. They will also bring home a small Reading Log where they have recorded words they would like more practise with. Children can log into to Read Write Inc. spelling zone on oxford owl (Oxford Owl for School and Home) using the username: year3mcg and password: spelling to complete activities to help with spelling rules of their choice. There will be no more weekly spelling tests in school.

Reading – As with previous years, children will be using a reading scheme called ‘Accelerated Reader’.  This scheme will identify a score for your child (which will be written in their school planner) and recommend suitable books based on that score.  You may feel that the books being recommended to your child are ‘easy’, but this scheme has been designed to test your child on their understanding of the content of the book, not the fluency of their reading.  Once your child completes their book, they need to bring the book back into school and complete a short test on an iPad in school. They will receive a percentage score and the scheme will then recommend a new book for them to read.  I will hear all of the children read each week as part of the reciprocal reading sessions.

Planners / Journals - Please be advised that school planners/journals should still be used to record any reading that takes place inside and outside of school and they will be collected in every Friday to be checked and signed.  All children should aim to read at least 4 times a week at home.

SATs Companion - As with Mirodo in previous years, in year 6 children will have access to SATs companion through a username and password in their planners. SATs Companion acts in the exact same way as Mirodo, with a similar layout, but with a specific focus on SATs. Children can use SATs Companion at any time to access practice activities and can also access tasks set for homework here, too.

Water bottles & snacks:

Children should bring a refillable bottle to school each day (filled only with water). Morning snacks can include toast, plain biscuits, fruit or cereal bars. Please do not send in crisps or chocolate for mornng snacks.

Should you have any queries or concerns about your child, please do not hesitate to speak to me at the door after school or contact me via the school office (0151 487 5678) or [email protected] anytime.
