'Home Learning Pack 4'

Date: 26th Apr 2020 @ 3:41pm

Dear Parents/Carers,

We hope you all have had a lovely weekend and are keeping well. We have tried our best to reduce the amount of work that needs to be printed out, so children can record their answers in either: Their home learning notebook or on a piece of paper, when work cannot be printed. Do not feel pressure to complete all this work, it is up to you to decide what suits your family best, we appreciate that learning from home can be extremely challenging, especially with younger children that often require support when doing their work.

‘Home Learning pack 4’ includes:

Maths: 4 maths worksheets based on halves and quarters, with answers included. Each lesson also has a matching learning clip for the children, which can be found by following the link: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-1/. There is also a Friday maths challenge, which will be posted on twitter on Friday morning.

English: As a school we have decided to follow a structure for our English lessons over the school closure, to ensure that the children are continuing to develop all aspects of the English curriculum. On Monday’s the children will receive their spellings on both twitter and spellingshed, as well as a comprehension to complete. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be SPAG lessons and Friday will be a creative writing opportunity.

Phonics: For phonics we will be using the Monster Phonics Scheme to aid the children in revising their sounds. This week we will be revising ir, ur, oo (as in shook) and oo (as in pool). Each day has a video/ppt that should be viewed first and then an accompanying worksheet. For the first part of the worksheet the children will need to be given a selection of words for the given sound that day for them to practice writing e.g. for ea you could give: heat, treat, leaf, sea and dream. On Friday as there is no phonics lesson this is when we would encourage the children to do their spelling quiz. Science: For science we are going to start our new topic ‘plants and animals’. This week the children have two science lessons to choose from.
Lesson 1: The children are to go on a scavenger hunt around the garden/on your walk and collect as many different flowers and leaves as they can find. Once they have done this the children can press the flowers and leaves, once the flowers and leaves have dried they can use the flowers in a nature picture. Follow the link below for advice on how to press and dry flowers:
https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/how-to-press-flowers.html
Lesson 2: Lesson 2 is an investigation that can be done at home to show how plants take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen. Please follow the link for the experiment details: https://science-u.org/experiments/do-leaves-breathe.html

Geography: This week for Geography we are going to be beginning our new topic ‘How does the weather affect our lives?’ We are going to ask the children to make their own rain gauge (following the instructions at the bottom) and then to record every day the amount of rainfall in millimetres. As an extension they can then reflect on the positives and negatives of the amount of rainfall that has fallen that week. For example: if there was a lot of rain a positive may be that the plants were well fed, but a negative may be that you didn’t get out in the garden as much.

History: For history the children have been given a ‘COVID19 Time Capsule Booklet’ this is something that can be dipped in and out of over a period of time and we become a lovely keepsake for the children in the future.

PSHE: For PSHE this week I am encouraging the children to make thank you posters for the heroes in their own lives, this may be: parents, postmen, bin men, milk men, brothers or sisters. Whoever the children feel are helping them through this difficult time.

DT/Art: As it is approaching summer time and more wildlife is appearing in our gardens, I would like the children to have a go at making their own bird feeders/houses. I have attached links below to some examples of bird feeders.  However you don’t have to follow these ideas and can make your own:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/makes/bird-feeder
https://www.rspb.org.uk/fun-and-learning/for-kids/games-and-activities/activities/make-a-recycled-bird-feeder/

We will be tweeting daily reminders of the activities and giving the children challenges to help keep them engaged. Where possible please remain connected by tweeting pictures of your child’s/children’s finished work to their class twitter page. There are also lots of alternative resources on our class’ homepage, if your child fancies something a bit different!  As always if you have any questions or queries please contact me on the school blog/ twitter, or you can call the school office and leave a message smiley

Many thanks as always for continuous support during this difficult time,

Miss McKimm and Mrs Chadwick.
