-Upper School 8 2017 - 2018

Miss Hughes

Welcome to Upper 8's Class Page.

We have had a fantastic start to the year and the children have settled in well to their new class.

The rumours are true- Year 6 can be very difficult, with lots of hard work and revision, however it is also the year that lifelong memories and friendships are formed.

I look forward to the year ahead with my new class and before we know it, we will be rehearsing the end of year performance and the dread of SATS will be a distant memory.

This class page will be used to celebrate children's work and inform parents about key information.

Please read the important information below:

Homework

Reading journals and maths homework will be given out on a Friday and must be returned by the following Thursday. Spellings will be learnt in school during the week, but children must take them home on a Friday to learn over the weekend, ready for their test on the Thursday.

Children in Year 6 will continue to use the Accelerated Reader programme. Children will be allocated with a book level, they will read a book of this level and then complete a short comprehension quiz on that book in school. The children's reading will be tracked by their class teacher but please read as much as you can with your child at home.

P.E.

For the Autumn term our class will be swimming on a Tuesday afternoon (please note that we will be back to school around 3.30).

Other PE lessons will take place on a Wednesday afternoon.

Topic

In our new topic we will learn about the Second World War in Europe and why the Battle of Britain was such a significant turning point in British History. We will look at the timeline of events such as the outbreak of the war, the Battle of Britain, the heroic rescue at Dunkirk, the Blitz, the D-Day landings, the liberation of the concentration camps and the celebrations of VE Day. We will research the lives of the ordinary people who faced the Blitz and had to deal with rationing and evacuation. Finally we will learn about the inspiring stories and achievements of significant people such as Anne Frank and Winston Churchill.

Our Class Read

Our first class read of the year is The Unforgotton Coat by Frank Cottrell Boyce.

If you have any concerns or questions please do not hesitate to come and see me at the door of give me a call.

Thanks

Miss. Hughes.
