Wed 14th September - Y6 Halewood Football League match reports - written by Mr McGorian

It was a great start for our Year Six Football team who started their Halewood League campaign with three wins out of three at Halewood Academy on Wednesday. The team faced difficult opponents in their first match and had to rely on Josh in goal to stay in the match as Holy Family had a number of chances early on. With the game looking like finishing goalless, Curtis (making his debut from Year 5) snatched the win with a great solo goal, after Louie had occupied the opposition defence with some great movement up front.

The second game against Yew Tree started frustratingly, but the team showed great determination and patience, even as shot after shot was blocked. Joe T continued to find space in behind the opposition defence and his hard work eventually paid off. Nathan also chipped in with a goal from defence as Plantation eventually ran out 5-0 winners.

After such a one sided game, you might expect that the team might find it hard to readjust for the next game – but the opposite was true as Plantation saved their best team performance for last, against their toughest opposition of the night, St Mark’s. Nathan and Matty were strong throughout in defence, communicating well with their goalkeeper to limit St Mark’s to any chances early on. Joe S and Harley were aggressive and competitive in midfield and kept driving the team forward, while Louie ran tirelessly for the team up front. After some more match-saving saves from Josh, Plantation started to push forwards for the win but time was running out. As the match looked set to finish in a draw, Joe S picked the ball up deep and charged towards the St Mark’s goal. His shot was block and broke to Harley who showed great vision and calmness to pick out Curtis at the back post. With the last kick of the game, he steadied himself before placing the ball in the back of the net for a dramatic last minute winner.

The lads were a credit to the school throughout and have now put themselves in with a great chance of securing qualification for the Knowsley finals later in the year. Well done everyone and thanks to all the children and adults who came to cheer us on!

Player of the Tournament: A really hard decision after some excellent performances all round, but the award goes to Curtis for a great debut – chipping in with two vital winners. Well done, Curtis!

Everyone at Plantation would like to thank Mr McGorian for giving up his time to take the children to these matches!
